While most issues are benign and can be effectively managed in outpatient settings, it is crucial to maintain a high index of suspicion for colorectal cancer. CLEVELAND CLINIC FOUNDATION
Has a 100 year long history and is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary academic medical center for over 100 year.
-
Globally, colorectal cancer (bowel cancer) is the third most common type of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death.
-
In 2022, the World Health Organization reported 1.93 million new colorectal cancer diagnoses, with approximately 900,000 deaths (46%) attributed to the disease (see Figure 1 below).
-
The countries with the highest incidence rates are shown in Figure 2.
-
Due to its large population, Asia accounts for approximately 50% of all diagnosed colorectal cancer cases (see Figure 3).
-
In the UK, around 41,000 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year, and approximately 16,000 people die from it annually.
-
Most cases of bowel cancer (95%) occur in individuals over the age of 50, though it can develop at any age. Nevertheless, there is growing concern about the rising incidence of colorectal cancer in younger patients.
-
The lifetime risk of developing bowel cancer is 1 in 14 for men and 1 in 19 for women.
Figure 1:
Figure 2:
Figure 3:
If you have risk factors for colon cancer or are concerned about symptoms suggestive of bowel cancer, we are more than happy to provide you with all the options available to you for screening or diagnostic testing. These include FIT (Faecal Immunochemical Test) stool test, colonoscopy or CT 'virtual' colonoscopy.
Symptoms suggestive of colorectal cancer.
-
A change in bowel habits, such as diarrhoea, constipation or more-frequent bowel movements
-
Dark maroon or bright red blood in stool
-
Narrow stool
-
A feeling that your bowel doesn't empty completely
-
Abdominal pain
-
Unexplained weight loss
-
Weakness or fatigue
Unfortunately, symptoms have a poor correlation with the diagnosis of colorectal cancer, with a positive predictive value ranging from 5% to 15%.
The most effective way to prevent colorectal cancer is through preventative testing, such as a colonoscopy, which can detect and remove premalignant polyps.
Countries that utilize colonoscopy as a screening tool for the early detection of premalignant and malignant colorectal conditions have definitively demonstrated a reduction in both the incidence and subsequent mortality associated with the disease (See Figure 4).

For individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, The London ColoRectal Practice offers a comprehensive bowel screening program tailored to your needs. Early detection and intervention are key to preventing serious complications and ensuring optimal outcomes.
Whether you have a simple abdominal wall hernia or a complex abdominal wall hernia, usually greater than 10 cm in size, we have the expertise to repair these. If appropriate, we can repair small hernias with minimally invasive surgery, allowing a quicker repair to occur. However, complex abdominal wall defects, especially those following GI surgery and incisional hernias, may require anterior or posterior component separations (ACS/PCS) for repair.
Every patient is unique, so Mr Nunoo-Mensah will offer you care and treatment tailored to meet your needs. If a wider multidisciplinary team is required to provide the best outcome, he works with dedicated plastic surgeons at Cleveland Clinic London, including Edmund Fitzgerald O'Connor, who specializes in plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery and may also recommend an abdomnoplasty to ensure an excellent outcome tailored to individual patient needs.
There is currently no cure for endometriosis. Endometriosis can be treated in several ways in order to reduce symptoms, improve quality of life, and improve fertility. The most common treatments for endometriosis that do not require surgery are hormone therapy and pain management. However, in the event surgery is required, it may involve excision (removal of the endometrial tissue using cutting) or ablation (destroying of the endometriosis cells using radiofrequency energy).
Cleveland Clinic London is proud to host some of the leading gynaecological surgeons in the country, including Ms Elizabeth Ball, with whom Mr Nunoo-Mensah collaborates closely to treat pelvic endometriosis that may involve the bowels. Contact us if you think you may have endometriosis or if you have a working diagnosis of simple or complicated endometriosis and would like to discuss your options.
It is important to consider short recovery time, a quick return to normal activity, low risk of complications and maintenance of functional outcomes when undergoing surgery for haemorrhoids, fistulas, or pilonidal disease. In order to achieve the best possible result, we are able to discuss with you minimally invasive procedures we perform. Below are some examples of these options:
-
Laser surgery for anal fistula, haemorrhoids and pilonidal disease
-
Other anal fistula surgery - including sphincter preservation techniques such as Permacol Paste Injection and BioLIFT procedures
-
Other haemorrhoidal surgery including Haemorrhoid artery ligation surgery (HALS) and stapled haemorrhoidectomy (PPH) procedures
Laser surgery
Haemorrhoid artery ligation surgery
A wide range of colorectal diseases that previously required open surgery can now be diagnosed and treated with minimally invasive surgery at the London Colorectal Surgery . In addition to less postoperative pain and fewer major complications following surgery, minimally invasive surgery results in shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, less scarring, less stress on the immune system, a smaller incision, and reduced operating time and costs for some procedures. We are y proud to offer:
-
Laparoscopic (keyhole/minimal invasive) surgery
-
Advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures including SILS – single incision laparoscopic surgery
-
Trans endoscopic microsurgery for small rectal tumours
-
Endoscopic mucosal resection of colorectal polyp
For investigating constipation and faecal incontinence we also offer:
-
Anorectal physiology (manometry)
-
3D endorectal ultrasound tests etc for investigating constipation and faecal incontinence
